Pillars balanced on the new home: managing, recommending and moving money

Summary

Guiabolso was one of Brazil’s first personal finance apps: people connect their bank accounts and see all their money in one place. On the Experience squad, I worked on the core of the app, using usage data and support tickets to improve the financial control flows. I led the Agenda integration with the bank statement and contributed to the new home, part of a quality program that raised NPS from 58 to 66.

I joined as a junior designer and was promoted to mid-level during this period. I owned the Agenda flow end to end. On the new home, I contributed structure proposals and the iterations after usability tests, working with research, product and engineering.

Context & challenge

The app had to balance three pillars: managing money, recommending financial products, and moving money. Its home was crowded, and the Agenda, where people plan upcoming bills and income, was underused: users had to type every bill by hand, even when the same expense was already in their statement.

Process

01

Listen to the data

Aligned with stakeholders, then crossed support tickets and user requests with feature usage data.

02

Prototype

Wireframes and navigable prototypes in Figma.

03

Test with users

Usability interviews with the research team, then iteration on what users raised.

04

Ship incrementally

Shipped the improvements step by step with the squad.

Key decisions

01 — Bills where the money already is

Tickets and usage data told the same story: people wanted to plan their bills, but registering them from scratch was too much work. I designed a flow that lets users pick any expense in their statement and add it to the Agenda as a bill or income, with the details already filled in. They only confirm the name, amount, due date and frequency, and can turn on a reminder for the day before.

After it shipped in June 2020, the CX team reported that users noticed and liked the change, Agenda access went up, and 8% of Agenda users clicked to pay through the app (source: Data Science team).

Three steps: any expense in the statement, details already filled in, linked to the Agenda

02 — One home, three pillars

For the new home, I contributed structure proposals that gave each pillar a place without one taking over: one balance with details on demand, quick actions for moving money, and a monthly plan that leads into investing suggestions. After research consolidated the usability report, I adapted the flows to what users raised and walked the squad through the changes, which shipped incrementally.

Outcome

The Agenda integration increased use of the feature, with 8% of Agenda users clicking to pay through the app. Together with other quality improvements across the app, the work on the home contributed to raising NPS from 58 to 66 and the store rating from 3.4 to 4.0.

What I learned

The best entry point to a feature is often data the user already has.

I’m grateful to so many people. Working at Guiabolso was a special time, especially thanks to Diogo, who trusted me and backed my career transition.
